What Can You Expect at the Consultation and Follow-up?

During your initial consultation (which can last up to an hour) the herbalist will discuss your current health complaint and look at your medical history, including previous ailments, details of medication being taken, diet and lifestyle.

Additionally your blood pressure and pulse may be taken, and if it is felt necessary a physical examination may be carried out (with your permission) to establish the best course of treatment. It is advised that you bring along a list of all pharmaceutical medicines and supplements, including dosages, along with you to the appointment.

Once the consultation is completed a prescription of herbs, usually in the form of tincture, capsule, cream or dried herbs for tea is made to suit your individual requirements. Additionally, you may be given advice on lifestyle or dietary changes. However if it is felt that another therapy or that a referral to your G.P would be more appropriate, you will be advised of this.

You will usually be asked to return within 2-4 weeks for a follow-up appointment, which typically takes half an hour, where the progress of your condition will be discussed and the prescription will be adjusted where necessary.

The number of appointments and length of time required to take the herbs varies, depending on you condition. Chronic conditions usually take longer to treat than acute ones.

• Digestive disorders e.g. I.B.S, indigestion, diverticulitis, constipation, and diarrhoea
• Skin disorders
• Cystitis, prostate problems
• Angina, high blood pressure, palpitations, arteriosclerosis and varicose veins
• Migraines, headaches, stress, tension, anxiety, poor sleep, depression, fatigue
• Musculoskeletal problems e.g. Arthritis, muscle pain, gout and fibromyalgia
• P.M.S, menopausal problems, fibroids, endometriosis
• Infections (acute and chronic), allergies, or just feeling generally unwell but no cause can be found

There are many other problems that can be treated, so please enquire if your condition is not listed. You may also use herbal medicine to help you through stressful events or if you are prone to infections or illness at certain times of the year.
